It’s like the tragedy of the commons. If everyone uses what they believe is a reasonable amount without collaborating, they could exhaust a resource.

If you're a cartoonist who is unsure about anything to do with a publisher, ask cartoonists who have worked with them! Your peers are the only way to fight the opaqueness of institutions! It will help you avoid bad situations and ask for better contracts.
