I've been working on this fantastic project for the past few weeks going into County Record Offices across England with @matthewbannister.bsky.social to look at the music found there, visiting the places associated with it and then recording the music with the marvellous Melrose Quartet.

This is such a grim situation. 4th year medical student daughter looking ahead and wondering if emigrating to Australia might be the only option for her and her cohort. it’s not just lack of specialist training places. It’s any jobs at all for newly qualified doctors.

Newly-qualified doctors in their first year of practice in England have voted in favour of strike action in a row over a shortage of jobs.

Dr Arjan Singh from the British Medical Association tells #BBCBreakfast this year there were 10,000 jobs available for 30,000 candidates

I did, in fact, use “mountebank” the other day in an audio whatsapp group i’m in but I may have ruined it with hyperbole as in “he’s a mountebank circus barker”

"My name's Kitty. I could have married, I've given gallons of blood and I can't stomach whelks, so that's me for you."

RIP Patricia Routledge.

Patricia Routledge has died, aged 96. Let’s be clear about this: her spectacular performance of Noël Coward’s “I Went To A Marvellous Party” is an utterly delicious masterpiece of comic timing and vivid dramatic intent that will never be bettered. youtu.be/M5xc7HlkjVI

Some of my favourite ads from The Stage Yearbook 1921 - 1925:

GS Melvin - a Scottish music hall comedian and pantomime dame who did female impersonation parodying hikers, girl guides and cyclists with songs: "I Like to Jump Upon a Bike", "Gladys, The Girl Guide", "I'm Happy When I'm Hiking"

Just overheard a very sweet conversation between parent and child refugees - some of those ones from the US we now have in London - about the surprising amount of “jay walking” here. Freedom of the boroughs guys - welcome!

Ah yes, who doesn’t have a portrait of oneself, at six, in the kimono given to us by Whistler …

At the same time all uni bursaries are withdrawn. Oh and she’s in utter despair that there are diminishing post- f1 specialism training places or even “just” jobs for newly qualified doctors. At the moment her only real option is to plan to leave the country (for NZ/Australia).

My daughter is in yr 5 of a 6yr medical course. She’s fulltime on placements in hospitals, as well as studying and is working a part-time job and living at home because the finance available to yr5&6 med students is so much less than in the “ordinary” student years.

Sigh-my trade association sent me an email celebrating the golden opportunity presented by the new legislation around advertising “less healthy food” not applying to audio; alongside a slightly breathless account of how the new AI is/uk deal will help reduce costs- cos less editing.
