Finally, on this day in 1967, Otis Redding recorded the hit song, " Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay."
Some made parallels between this song and Sam Cooke's " A Change is gonna come" as tragedy struck both men somewhat foretelling their deaths.

On this day in 1963, LBJ confers Presidential Medal of Freedom to Contralto, Marian Anderson, Ralph Bunche, and writer Thorton Wilder, along with 29 others. Marian Anderson was Black excellence at its best and we should be singing her praises more today.

Finally, on this day in 1943, MLB Commissioner Kenesaw Landis announced that teams may sign Negro players. Of course it didn't happen until 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke into the big leagues.

Also on this day in 1927, the Duke Ellington band opened at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Though set in Harlem, Blacks were not admitted to the club at this point. Black line dancers had to pass the paperback test.
