Aren’t there like, a billion groups for ARAH?

Unfortunately, most of the G.I. Joe podcasts who were so interested in this stuff didn’t migrate over from Twitter, and nothing is worth going back there.

He starts carrying a machine gun rocket launcher in the first panel of the next issue

I’m hoping that sharing the first issue will convince any G.I. Joe collectors out there who might have a copy of issue 3 of the G.I. Joe manga, to scan and send it in.

So, normally I wait until I’ve translated an entire series before posting it. This is because of how important having all of the context is, to good Japanese translation.

G.I. Joe is a unique case though, because issue 3 (Comic BomBom November 1986) has proven all but impossible to find.

The G.I. Joe manga is just like the Marvel comic, with a few key differences:

The names are different
Not many of the toys are featured
It follows an original character
It isn’t very good

With that in mind, enjoy the English translation of G.I. Joe manga Issue 1, by Hisaji Ueda.

Not much, what’s Power Up with you, dog?

G.I. Joe material released after the 1986 series changed it back to Snake Eyes (Suneku-aizu).

This decision was especially curious considering “ai” is the Japanese word for “love” (愛), so making him “Snake Eye” makes it sound like his name is “Snake Love”.

So, everyone already knows Takara changed Duke’s name to “Grunt”, made minor alterations to most characters’ real names (like Snow Job from "Harlan Moore" to "Harlan Nykänen"), and changed the name of basically every vehicle… but one of the stranger choices was changing “Snake Eyes”, to “Snake Eye”.

I don’t know what I expected the Japanese version of Shipwreck to sound like… but somehow, it’s the actual things he’s saying which are more surprising.

Heck yeah, that’s more like it.
Two heavy weapons Grimlocks, and a Dinobots combiner.

However, this isn’t the run of the mill Volcanicus. Lots of kids wished the Dinobots combined, “COMBOT 6” finally asks “what if Optimus could wear the combined Dinobots, like armor?”

More Transformers designed by kids, from 1986

“Sniper Dester: Transforms into an M-16 assault rifle. He is the father of the Destrons”

What? That’s a GREAT idea, and it looks like he holds a full bayonet as a weapon?

When I was a kid, you just drew some extra guns on Grimlock, and called it a day

Anyway, this is what Hasbro was doing before Mr. Potato Head.

On the surface, it’s like dressing up as a fireman or police officer, but keep in mind the constant fear and anxiety that something awful is about to happen, and you are powerless to prevent it.

Now you can cosplay as someone whose loved ones will survive, as long as you stay hyper-vigilant enough.

During the 1940s, there were a surprising number of toy “Junior Air Raid Warden” novelty kits, based on preparing for when bombs would be dropped on your friends and family.

Note this advertisement makes no mention the helmet and gas mask are nonfunctional, made of cloth and cardboard.

I was going to share several 1986 Transformers designs by kids… but it’s not fair to steal focus from “Dreamer”.

She’s a female transformer who changes from a bed, to a centaur, and can destroy her enemy’s brain. Also, if you want to ride her, she’ll put a pillow on her back.

She is everything.

There are days when Buzzer is the most relatable character in G.I. Joe.

Meanwhile, enjoy a translation of what can charitably be called the entirety of the Pre-Transformers Mech Soldier lore: their instruction sheet.

Recently, the Mini-Spies starred in the new Metro Wars comic, where Arcee and Deerstalker solve a Sherlock Holmes-style mystery.

Some Mini-Spies are even given names! Keeping with the theme, they’re named after Sherlock Holmes stories… unfortunately, this results in one being named “Yellow Face”.
November 26, 2025 at 11:54 PM
As reported by @tfsquareone.bsky.social US shipping boxes even called the mini-spy releases “Koma Cars”.

Koma sold the concept to Takara so early on, Takara was able to file the patent under their name.

Koma also developed the remote control Diaclone City Bulldog, and Remocon Car Robot from 1984.

The Mini-Spies began their lives as Takara’s Mecha Senshi (Englishized as “Mech Soldier”), a series of low-cost robots, originally developed and sold to Takara by a company called “Koma Co. LTD”.

Yes, even I think this is excessive.
No, it didn’t stop me.
