that evokes the grey concrete of postwar Berlin perfectly, whilst also rebelling against it with musical artistry. Anyway, them's my thoughts after a bit too much wine. I love Berlin-era Bowie for sure.

I'm extremely late to this thread but I completely agree. The vocal on the original is full of raw emotion while the live versions lean more towards the style of a cruise ship crooner. Also, the live versions have far too much 'swing'. The studio recording has a brutalist, four-square krautrock feel
