The digital divide has always been a problem. But if we don’t have the knowledge to solve this issue I’m afraid that my students will be left behind compared with affluent districts that are already using AI.

My thoughts are that the voices that support banning due to their fear of cheating are much louder than those who want reasonable protections and guidance for AI. How many schools have done PD to help teachers learn how to leverage AI in their practice?

Not sure what else is blocked. Google Draw was impacted by IT but I was able to get it restored after a few weeks of complaining. I think I will try to get an inventory of blocked AI sites next week.

My first computer was the Tandy 1000. One review called it the computer the IBM PCjr should have been. I think the decision to use cartridges for programs was a horrible idea.

The advice has always been to read to your children. If they are surrounded by text, given high interest materials, shown that reading nurtures a variety of skills, they should respond positively. I’ve encountered many high school students who never read for pleasure. They are at a disadvantage.

I worked at the Heathkit store near NYC for a few years in the 1980s. It is where my technology career began. We also sold Apple products, desktop publishing, CAD and Netware systems. The Heathkit H-248 was my system and it was built like a tank. Zenith was the leader in portable computers too.

The majority of my teaching career has been spent as a special education teacher. It’s a position in my high school that allowed me to learn about chemistry, math, English and history. I acquired knowledge that cut across multiple disciplines. And anything I did benefited ALL students.

The number of well known and unknown brands of systems rocking the Intel 80286 was extensive. Dell, Compaq, Gateway, Zenith, AST and others used the 16 Bit ISA bus. IBM struck back with the proprietary Microchannel architecture that ultimately was abandoned. EGA video was the new standard.
