imo the hardest part about being anywhere in the middle of the gender binary is wanting exactly this but knowing the world isn't (and may never be) ready for you. for me at least, coming out and pursuing transition was also accepting the fact that my mere existence is going to make me stand out

i would suspect the reason why (queer) ppl gravitate towards dark romance is bc GOOD dark romance challenges the status quo and subverts expectations of what a "normal" romance should be at least SOME way, and not just uphold the same gender roles we've been force fed all our lives except Worse

in my personal opinion, if something lacks any kind of subversion then its ultimately still meeting the status quo. it's still the exact same cishet gender dynamics as bodice rippers except now they can pretend the domestic abuse is part of the fantasy.
