I did a data export of my Telegram group (because people kept saying that history will disappear once it reaches 1 million messages) and it’s now taking up 50GB on my laptop

That’s a lot of yapping (and weird files that people have uploaded over the last 9 years)

We’ve got knockoff Spirit Halloween in Glasgow now and it’s definitely scary

The front of a shop on a slightly dilapidated street corner. The sign has “Halloween Shop” banner that’s a bit too small to cover up the name of the generic clothing shop that used to be there. The window displays have various tacky costumes.

A closeup of the left window display shows off a Minion costume that I can only really describe as “saggy”, a mannequin wearing black robes and a scary mask, and another mannequin wearing a rather skimpy frilly costume.

Putting your menu on a computer is an excellent idea that can never go wrong in any possible way

a food counter with pasta dishes on display. there’s large monitors where you would expect a menu to be. the leftmost one has the Windows “Automatic Repair” screen on it, and the others are all blank

Yeah… What I’ve recently realised is that it’s easy to cargo-cult unit tests, but writing tests that actually add value (rather than feeling like an impediment) is a skill that’s been surprisingly difficult to hone — as well as figuring out how to fit them into old systems that didn’t have any

I was being reasonably facetious :p But I’ve spent a lot of my life as a dev working on projects that aren’t easy to get automated testing into, either because they’re things like GUI apps, or because they’re huge legacy things I inherited that were never written with testing in mind

I remember seeing this brand in Spanish supermarkets in the late 2000s and I appreciate that their graphic design has remained exactly identical, even after they’ve expanded into other countries

i kind of wish there was an option for this — i have mod powers in a couple of huge (six-digit member count, i think?) servers and those are busy enough that quiet removal is probably the right option there

but for smaller ones… idk. give server owners the choice!

lol yep, i got so angry about this last night that i finally wrote a blog post ranting about it

in theory i could probably speed up some of my work as a dev by using them, but i just don’t want to go near them on principle. all the negatives vastly outweigh the few positives for me
