In HAUSU (1977) and SCHOOL IN THE CROSSHAIRS (1981), I think both modes are there right from the jump. Color, cutting & VFX can feel like a sort of layer on top of the sincerity.
They’re also here, but like Cody said, I feel the merge is more gradual, only really ‘hitting’ near the climax

I did not like this movie very much. Unparalleled vibes on screen, but when so much of it was cut by the studio, the best ideas & concepts are unfortunately not tangible.
But the conversation? That's a different story.

Still thinking about this. Special guests aside, I think Jack Cassidy’s characters might be the meanest Columbo villains pound for pound. He’s just always such a bastard to Columbo. Talking down to him, taunting him, all with that fucking car salesman grimace.
