King of the silent pictures, hiding out till the talkies blow over. Film noirs and world cinema, mostly.

46 movies later, finishing #Noirvember this year how I started with a pitch black foreign noir THE LOST ONE (1951), where Peter Lorre both stars and directs himself in. A sordid crime thriller with shades of his earlier iconic roles he did for Lang and Florey.

Watch No. 19 - 13 TZAMETI (2005)
Géla Babluani's sparse monochrome debut, that visually is like a bastard child of Soviet silent cinema and European film-noirs of the 50's. An above average debut feature that is at times surreal, atmospheric and devilishly deadpan.

Watch No. 18 - SCENE OF THE CRIME (1949)
MGM makes a film-noir, and very characteristic of its glossy production values some scenes look like they are straight out of a Garbo movie. An episodic police procedural, that though light on substance is still an enjoyable watch.

Watch No. 17 - INFERNO (1953)
20th Century Fox's first ever 3D picture is a sumptuous technicolor desert noir, that hardly ever has a dull moment. Robert Ryan is great as usual in a role where voiceover is cleverly used, while Lucien Ballard's photography never misses.

Watch No. 16 - FINGERMAN (1955)
Frank Lovejoy is a bit of a miscast here, and narrative tends to lean more on melodrama. But, it does feature a lot of fedora hats, trench coats and men/women smoking, apart from a graded crime busting making it very watchable.

Watch No. 15 - SHOOT TO KILL (1947)
An outrageously mounted cheapie with a labyrinth plot and double crosses, that in the end successfully does not tie itself in a knot. Economy is of the essence here, with some lovely noir lensing thanks to Benjamin Kline of DETOUR fame.

Watch No. 14 - THE BITTER STEMS (1956)
Certainly stakes a claim for a top-tier film-noir in both style and substance, filmed outside Hollywood for its age. Carlos Cores plays a convincing fall guy who gets done in by a twisted Argentine version of the American Dream.

Watch No. 13 - IF I SHOULD DIE BEFORE I WAKE (1952)
Tops the heap of the movies I've seen this #Noirvember so far. A horror noir with shades of Lang's M and Tetzlaff's THE WINDOW, that still shocks and astounds even today. A demented fairy tale from the annals of Argentine noir.

Watch No. 12 - THIS SIDE OF THE LAW (1950)
Quite an enjoyable gothic mystery noir, which ticks off a few film-noir standards effectively - voiceovers, noir lensing, impersonators and crooked lawyers. Kent Smith's aloof acting is very effective, and so is DOP Carl Guthrie.

Watch No. 11 - THE LONG HAUL (1957)
A lovely little noir melodrama with a terrific Diana Dors, who outshines Victor Mature in every scene. The trucking action scenes are quite solid, in this high quality Brit crime movie that should satiate both noir and Diana Dors fans.

Watch No. 10 - EYEWITNESS (1956)
Muriel Box's underseen British crime noir is a good pioneering example of a women's picture in a noir space. Paced just about right, the narrative moves expeditiously aided by some well written women characters. Taut and a very fun watch.

Watch No. 9 - THE MADONNA'S SECRET (1946)
Emigré Wilhelm Thiele brings some European finesse to this B-noir from Republic Pictures. Atmospheric lensing thanks to DOP great John Alton is another positive, making this low-budget noir as good as any prestigious productions.

Watch No. 8 - FALL GUY (1947)
Another filing in a briskly paced and enjoyable offering from Monogram Pictures, this time in the sub-genre of amnesia/blackout noir. Cornell Woolrich's short story gets a lively screen adaptation, with no dull moments what so ever.

Watch No. 7 - THE HIT (1984)
Stephen Frears sophomore effort is a neo-noir road movie with existentialism abound. The late great Terence Stamp is the MVP here, head and shoulders above the movie's uneven plotting. A notable crime drama, with an unforgettable Stamp.

Watch No. 6 - STARK FEAR (1962)
An unhinged Psycho-esque low budget iteration, very much in the realm of film-noir in style and substance. Weird, problematic but also very much a watchable fare. Pre-fame John Williams scoring the party music here is a surprising oddity.

Watch No. 5 - CASH CALLS HELL (1966)
Another terrific Japanese noir find, where Hideo Gosha churns out a masterful crime drama with a tremendous heart. Its capped by an accomplished jazz score which shapeshifts quite nicely between the sombre and action parts.

Watch No. 4 - COVER UP (1949)
Holiday noir where Dennis O'Keefe not just helms the acting, but also gets co-screenwriting credits. An enjoyable Christmas murder mystery, where a breezy William Bendix role as a small town sheriff elevates a better than average crime noir.

Watch No. 3 - THE CRIMINAL (1960)
Joseph Losey's gritty and tough-as-nails prison/heist late noir, that features an exceptional jazz score by Johnny Dankworth. Stanley Baker here is as good as he's in another classic British noir - HELL DRIVERS (1957)

It's #Noirvember time, again. Watch No. 1 this year is DEATH OF A CYCLIST (1955) from Franco-era Post WW2 Spain, where film-noir embellishes a very capable social melodrama. Highlight is its exquisite deep focus photography, something that would make Welles and Tourneur proud.
