Today the Council adopted the soil monitoring law to track soil health, manage contaminated sites and mitigate land take, aiming for healthy soils by 2050.

Initiated in 2014, the project installed four weirs by 2016. Monitoring and maintenance continue under the supervision of Neusiedler See‐Seewinkel National Park Project and WWF Austria. The project stands as a model for collaborative environmental stewardship and responsible corporate citizenship.

A sophisticated computer model from the Vienna Technical University helps maintain higher water levels, supporting the natural regeneration of salt content in the lakes, crucial for their unique ecology.

Romerquelle GmbH set out to raise groundwater levels in lakes 60km southeast of Vienna, to sustain the characteristic salt content of the lakes. This involves building weirs, closing drainage ditches, and careful management to prevent negative impacts on nearby areas.

However, hundreds of lakes have been destroyed by land drainage over the past century, and urgent action is needed to protect the remaining lakes and their ecosystems, which are also vital for regional eco-tourism.
