It could be that it’s more acute in psychology. I don’t really know how to think about degrees of underdetermination conceptually, and (given what I said above) in order to make the comparative claim knowledgeably I’d have to be conversant in, like, all the sciences, which I’m obviously not

If, as you seemed to think, psychologists had looked just at cult members and then proposed cognitive dissonance as a generic psychological mechanism, that *would* have been a hasty generalization. But, it turns out, they *didnt* do that. They ran dozens and dozens of studies with non-cultists
