We're incredibly concerned about the welfare of two satellite-tagged golden eagles, Tarras and Wren, that have recently disappeared in Dumfries and Galloway.

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland.

The bird was trying to get to shore, but was pushed away by the people.

Is this how people healthily love and care for birds/wildlife? 💔

🧵 I had a great time at #MigFest25 as always, it’s 👍🏼 to see so many people who also ❤️ birds/migration.

But really upsetting that people have to get ridiculously close to get a shot/view of a migrating bird, likely exhausted. Please respect wildlife.

Great to see Lancaster bird expert Dr Stuart Sharp explaining the importance of ringing and tagging birds in this piece published by the BBC today! 🐦

This does not address the key issue, the large parts of the CGNP are burnt for grouse shooting. This dries them out and makes them more flammable. We need rewetting and a national scheme where all fires are banned during times high fire risk. @cairngormsnews.bsky.social www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

(1/) The charismatic Dipper is at home in our faster flowing waterways, especially in the north and west of the UK. Find out more about how its population is faring along waterways in this thread! @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social #Ornithology

Last year, the EU challenged the UK’s decision to close sandeel fishing in English and Scottish waters of the North Sea.

Sandeels are small, but they’re a key food source for #Puffins, Kittiwakes, and many other seabirds.

I have lived in rural/semirural Lancashire for the last 5 years and have had often linnets flying over my garden, but never feeding in my garden. A pair feeding on dandelion seeds ❤️

First day of the season checking nest boxes, what a beautiful day. Most nests were at a stage N1 - NL, tits and a nuthatch. Waiting impatiently for the arrival of pied flycatchers and redstarts!

1/6 Monitoring some #seabird species using observer-based methods is difficult, this can lead to infrequent data collection, or none at all

Little data on populations= limited ability to understand how threats may impact these species

🧵1/7 What do massive insect crashes mean for insectivorous birds? And can aquatic habitats help?

Today at #BOU2025 I'm exploring how aquatic habitats might help to buffer declining insectivore populations, using the Spotted Flycatcher as an example.

🧵4/5 In contrast, parental care is affected negatively by flow, with lower number of feeds delivered by the parents when flow is higher, likely due to physical limitations. However, parents may be able to compensate by diet switch or foraging further afield.
The relationship between the total flow and the provisioning rates in week 2 of the nesting period in dipper chicks. The line shows the predicted relationship from the best fitting LME and the circles show the raw data; shaded areas show the 95% confidence interval. N = 22.

🧵3/5 We found that higher flows are associated with 📈 chick growth rates likely due to the effect on aquatic prey abundances that are associated with fast flowing and highly oxygenated waters.
The relationship between the total flow and the residuals of tarsus growth rate in dippers. The line shows the predicted relationship from the best fitting LME and the circles show the raw data; shaded areas show the 95% confidence interval. N = 77.

🧵2/5 Climate change is one of the drivers causing these declines, although its effects have been less studied than pollution and land use change.

We investigate the effects of flow changes on offspring development and parental care in dippers, a highly specialised fast-flowing water species.
