In an unconscionable decision, the Smithsonian Institute has decided to no longer support the Biodiversity Heritage Library from 1 Jan 2026. Please someone step up and take it over.

Foundations: please step up and take over the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). This is an absolutely essential scanned archive of all of the old journals and books from the 1500s to about 1920. Has been indispensable for my research.

There is so much good work coming out of @libraryfutures.bsky.social right now, but this Zine we sponsored featuring writing from incarcerated librarians is really special and beautiful. I learned so much from these knowledge workers’ writing. www.libraryfutures.net/publications...

This has been the consensus of every leading AI researcher I know who is serious about the science and the evidence, as opposed to a) trying to push a product or a brand and/or b) viewing the creation of AGI as an article of religious faith and devotion.

Vast majority of AI experts believe that key assumption of Biden & Trump Admins on AI- that we are about to develop soon AGI/humanlike AI- is very unlikely to happen soon & lack needed tech. A major US foreign policy is based, as usual, on inaccurate premises.

How Cory Arcangel Recovered a Late Artist’s Digital Legacy. “This was his computer exactly as he had left it, down to his customized Photoshop shortcuts and the positions of the windows.” I love Cory, this is awesome. [newyorker.com]

Michel Majerus died in a plane crash, but the contents of his laptop are providing a window into his process two decades later. Arcangel says, “It’s like he just stepped out of the room.”

My main suggestion when filling in the BBC survey recently was a plea for them to buy up all the rights to all the matches forevermore lol. Gotta shoot your shot. Lol.

Thx he was shocked too. She told him to "stand to the side", that he could "celebrate at Trafalgar Square if he liked" but couldn't march with the unions. We march every year, sometimes as a family (this was my son's 1st one 10 years ago). Some folks might need a reminder of what solidarity means.
noramcgregorbl.bsky.social
You know, my husband did try to join you today. He took the day off work to show up 4 the cause and while he waited to march was approached by a woman who told him he was "not allowed to walk with the unions". We're both pretty upset by this. Certainly doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the day.

based on how often the naughty teens of major cities throw the rentable scooters directly into the river i've formed a theory that the many iron age swords and cauldrons found in lakes around europe that we've previously assumed were ceremonial and sacrificial in nature were in fact thrown by teens

This is really cool. Reddit users coming through again. “A team of volunteer archivists has recreated the Centers for Disease Control website exactly as it was the day Donald Trump was inaugurated. The site, called RestoredCDC.org”

The team used a Reddit-made archive of the CDC website to create a new live mirror of the site before it was purged.

We've been exploring what author-AI collaboration could look like, working with Edgar Allan Poe's story The Cask of Amontillado as a case study:

www.loomers.world/cask/

Is this a worthwhile way of interacting with a text? Is it something that writers and readers alike could get behind?
