Now, having a 32-team event (and how this is even financially doable; skepticism remains in CBB circles about long-term viability) is another matter. It is unfortunately/unquestionably draining other November CBB MTEs as a result. But if staged as planned in '26, it'll be a humongous sports event.

There are more schools getting closer to signing on for the event as well, sources tell CBS Sports. If you're losing track of who's in this thing, understood. For 2025, the Players Era Festival is an 18-team event the week of Thanksgiving. I wrote a story on it back in July, schedule included:

College hoops scoop: The Players Era Festival has signed four-year deals with Louisville, Miami, Missouri, Ohio St. and Virginia, sources told CBS Sports. Florida also recently joined, which means the Vegas-based NIL event now has 24 of its targeted 32 schools for a mega event in November of 2026.

I was about to launch a column about how utterly stupid it would be to have a Ryder Cup end 14-14 and for one team to be declared a winner, when the best possible drama would be for the captains to pick two to play a playoff hole ... but I suppose that will have to wait for another year, or decade.

Just had a wonderful experience. Found myself walking out of the media tent alongside a promising freelance photog named Ken Griffey Jr. We talked as he made his way to the 14th hole. The amount of people walking opposite his way who recognized him—and couldn’t believe their eyes—was a bit magical.
