I don't particularly like Newsom. But he's the governor of the nation's biggest state and he's gone out of his way to show up all over TV/social media the past several years. My sense is his name recognition is way higher among normies who don't follow politics every day than the other candidates.

It's incredible that excellent schools like the University of Oklahoma exist all over this country. Insert reference to that Tony Judt essay everyone likes. But we've also taken it for granted for a long time and with educational polarization it seems hard to preserve.

New York should have a non-Democratic party that competes statewide, but fusion voting has given us the conservative party which if anything is more at odds with the median NY voter than the state GOP

You could divide political conflict in half in all 50 states and imagine more local parties reflecting those divides. In some cases it would be a labor party like this. In other places it might be something different. But it seems very hard to coordinate outside of occasional one offs

It was (is?) unclear if you just meant there are more prominent Democrats advocating further left economic positions or if you were saying "post-liberal" to imply they were pursuing these goals through illiberal/non-democratic means.

Something I think about a lot (because I used it in my dissertation research) is it's kind of funny how high quality the quota control survey era of the 1930s and 1940s increasingly looks compared to the current era.

As a side note, I guess I understand why someone would turn off replies from non-followers/etc., but it does incentivize loudly quoting rather than just engaging with someone more quietly.

I agree Harris tried to run as a moderate in 2024, but in 2019/20 she ran as a liberal and the clips of the 2019/20 Harris in attack ads made it awkward for 2024 Harris to convince swing voters she was a moderate.

Unfortunately we can't observe the counterfactual where he didn't say that

Apparently it's named after one of Robert E. Lee's ancestors, so it's okay to make fun of it

A student in my class from NJ said it today but I already forgot and it looks like it won't matter much moving forward
