All photos mine. As a teenager, I loved a class that spurred my interest in creating and sharing photographic images. For most of my adult life, I put that […] [bridged from https://pixelfed.social/NYSloth on the fediverse by https://fed.brid.gy/ ]

There’s something really enjoyable about counting off exposure time by quietly muttering “one Mississippi” to approximate a single second of open shutter. Followers may recall that a friend gave me an old Pho-Tak box camera which appears as my profile avatar […]

The left half of the photo shows the right shoulder, mane, and snout of Fortitude, one of the two sculpted lions guarding the library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd street. The right half of the photo shows the arched windows and American flags of the Beaux Art Astor Trust Company building. A woman in a flowing black outfit admires an element of Jennie C. Jones’s musical sculpture Ensemble. The piece shown rises about three meters from its plinth and is comprised of two geometric prisms made of steel. Musical strings drawn tautly over a soundbar bar on the right hand prism enable it to be tuned and played like a zither. Visitors to the rooftop garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art chat with each other and take photos over the hedge that defines the terrace’s edge. In the background across Central Park stands the El Dorado and other apartment buildings. The monochrome photograph provides a low angle view of Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze sculpture of a female figure, right arm raised to its head, its torso half covered by its dress.

Are you a New York voter? Are you also planning to vote for progressive candidates this November? If so, please consider voting for the candidates of your choice on the Working Families Party line rather than on the Democratic Party line. With New York’s […]

This photo of the lower Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade was taken with my forty year old Nikonos dive camera. It shows Brooklyn Bridge Park in the foreground, the East River in the middle distance, about three dozen high rise buildings on the opposite shore, and a few puffy clouds floating by above it all. I had planned to come back to this location to use contemporary equipment to shoot digital photos of a full moon behind the Statue of Liberty, but the weather turned against me, so I stayed in bed.

With the wind tousling its mane and tail, a white Icelandic horse walks along a black sand beach, the sea and sky serving as backdrop.

Do you like your water crunchy or smooth? The black sand beach where the Glacial Lagoon at Vatnajökull National Park exits to the sea offers water both ways: the swirling dark waves of the North Atlantic or the crystalline blue structure of a glacial fragment […]

Love’s not the lock; it’s the hole cut in the fence. If William Blake didn’t say it, he should have. #nyc #photography #smartphone #love
Numerous padlocks attached as romantic tributes (including a large, brass, heart-shaped one) surround a hole through which can be seen a distant train about to enter the tunnel.

The sun rises at Kirkjufell, the iconic "Church Mountain" on Iceland's Snæfellsnes peninusula. This photo was taken a little further downriver from the scene I posted previously. #Iceland #photography
A waterfall and river comprise the foreground of the photo, while on the horizon, an orange and rose colored sunrise illuminates the peak of steeply sloped mountain.

I am delighted to have my old Nikonos dive camera repaired and functioning once again. I have heard it called "the poor man's Leica." I don't know about that, but I do love it! #photography #nyc #believeinfilm #nikonos
A field of wooden pilings rises from the Brooklyn shore of the East River while in the distance stands the Financial District of Lower Manhattan.

Geothermal energy has been used in Iceland since the Vikings and currently provides heat and hot water to 90% of the homes. Here at Hverarönd, it has baked the landscape dry. #photography #Iceland #geology
A low, wide angle shot shows a field of cracked mud that has been baked by rising geothermal heat.

Thank you! I wouldn't be here in the Fediverse if I couldn't take correction from enthusiastic followers.

Iceland often showcases its own geological formation. You can see some of the forces well at Hverir near Lake Myvatn. #photography #Iceland #geology

The only thing more dramatic than the light on the beach at Höfn was this white horse. Here he tries to play the role of the sensitive type. #photography #Iceland #horse

The colorful hills of Landmannalaugar in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in Iceland’s Highlands offer excellent walking trails not to mention designated geothermal springs for post-hike soaking. #photography #Iceland #landscape
A small rivulet winds through a valley, the sloping sides of which display colors that, while largely khaki, also include gray, black, blue, and green.

The turquoise water at Sigölduglúfur results from all the silica it absorbs as it seeps from the hydroelectric reservoir and through the lava fields before emerging here. #photography #smartphone #landscape #Iceland
A half dozen cascades emerge from a cliffside of basalt to plunge and join the bright blue waters below.

The word for waterfall in Icelandic is foss, and apparently it’s a hugely popular hashtag here in the Fediverse. Who knew? This photo shows Skógafoss⁩ close up as its water falls freely into the open from a more remote source. #photography #Iceland #monochrome #foss
Cascading water falls in a manner suggestive of a curtain. The black and white image fills the entire frame.

Don’t clean your screen! Those specks in the sky are all sea birds. Okay, maybe clean your screen, too. Yeah, you’ve got some schmutz there. #photography #monochrome #Iceland #bird

Comets hurtling through space? No. It's glacial ice and swirling sea foam on a black sand beach. One photo shows a wave receding, the other a wave crashing in. I don’t think I’ve ever had as much pure fun taking photographs as I had standing in the North […]

Vortices of white sea foam swirl off the pointed corners of a chunk of clear glacial ice and recede across the black sand. A rush of incoming white sea foam swirls against and around a chunk of clear glacial ice that sits on soon-to-be-inundated black sand.
