And of course Disney wasn’t the sole influence. I initially wrote this as an aside to my Unico history vid to assert that Unico was Tezuka’s reflection on his Disney inspirations. Princess Iron Fan and Momotaro were both massive influences.

The speculation section is linked in the description. It goes into my thoughts on Tezuka’s portrayal of black people and the idea that Joe may have been a story seeing as his essay was written one year after he published a comic with a black soldier named Joe. All speculation though.

His follow up, an adaptation of the opera Bluebeard’s Castle, is an amazing thematic follow-up . It also has the gorgeous Powell and Pressburger imagery. The BFI finally did a modern release last year.
