Or the Iranians upset with the U.S. ?

Were there not stories of people pushing around prams full of bank notes during hyperinflation in Germany back in the day just to buy bread? I seem to recall reading that Germany printed some very high denomination notes.
Wiki has photos of a 5 and a 50 Trillion Marks notes, so it might be true.

Very informative and thought provoking.

Having U.S. companies extracting minerals critical for the U.S. independence of the Chinese supply chain would also be a mild deterrent against an expansionist Russia.

The geography to the west makes avoiding Russia physically a diplomatic challenge.

It reminds me of the story told by an AIF PoW about his time in Japan (Russell
Savage in A Guest of the Emperor). He was talking to a guard who said he could tell that Japan was losing the war because the magnificent Japanese victories were happening closer and closer to the home islands.

would need a real historian to do the analysis in the light of more recent government file releases - just as is being done with the Pacific Theatre.

There are suggestions from decades ago that the division came from sheets of influence agreed with Stalin and that the U.S. and allies did not push hard to get to the demolition line to save lives - letting the Russians do the street fighting.

Whether those “conspiracy theories” are right

The history goes back hundreds of years, if not over a thousand. One invades the other and neither liked it. Cypress is not long ago.

that the carrier force which started the war against the U.S. was a mere shadow of itself in competence and effectiveness by the time of the Philippines Sea (aka Great Marianas Turkey Shoot)

Pokrovsk seems similar.

Eventually even the Japanese realised that they could not hold on in Guadalcanal and they were forced back over the Owen Stanleys.

The losses at Coral Sea and Midway also took out 5 carriers worth of pilots so the outcome was

In retrospect, the long grinding campaign against Japan in the Solomons especially Guadalcanal, the defence of Rabaul and over the Kokoda Track bled the IJN, and especially the IJN’s carrier pilots. The logistics of feeding the front with matériel created opportunity to reduce the support train.

The choice was made by asking an AI program to select a word. Choosing a two word fragment is close enough - indeed a lot closer than the AI answer on any Google search.

I do wish those using gerrymander methods to defeat Trump would stop to consider what they would think if the Trump side did the same but went further to ensure that Trumpism (not Republicans) could not be voted out.

It is not the way to preserve Democracy. It is the way to kill it. Ballot box win

Do not underestimate the way the left behaves when it is in power with little prospect of being removed. It is no better than the extreme right.
The “equality, but some are more equal than others” is truly frightening at close quarters.
Vicious payback is a very real weapon of both extremes.

I worry deeply about using the electoral boundaries to disenfranchise a part of the population so they never get a say.

The U.S. was born on the “no taxation without representation” mantra and a disenfranchised portion in a population with a constitutional right to bear arms is not a good goal.

Do you have an opinion on Cars for Ukraine which is recommended on a surprisingly wide number of YT sites?

I have been reluctant to send funds as it is difficult to be sure one is not being scammed by the Russians (or similar).
Is there a reliable way to get the details to add to your support of these folk. One feels so useless just watching from afar, but cash can help.

Possibly some secret, back room quid pro quo? For Turkey, military seems the most likely aspect. India possibly the banking and SWIFT aspect, or possibly purchasers from Indian refineries getting worried about sanctions on them if Russian oil is in the mix. China - who knows?

You need to get the Russians to leave Crimea. Better just to make life unbearable there. Water was wrecked by Russia, fuel by Ukraine. Defences ditto. Easier, shorter, to escape via the Kerch bridge.
Then no need to invade or put up with Russians there after Russia loses. Exporting them is harder.

It was the “I am not one of them - I will drain the swamp in DC” rhetoric that Trump exploited and in a way still benefits from.
Folk give him a pass for outrageous behaviour which is different from how a career politician would act as it reinforces the perception of the outsider breaking up normal

an understanding of cause and effect. And time.

In today’s world we want an answer immediately: we are not prepared to wait to gather the facts and analyse them.
So the click bait headline becomes the accepted truth immediately and that remains so for many despite evidence to the contrary.

The answer is never that the government sensor as you cannot be sure that power is not used in the way Hitler and Putin have.
The ideal answer is self censorship, coupled with critical analysis of what is being pedalled at you.
Alas, this requires acquiring knowledge, including a lot of history and
