Okay I just realized pre-downloads is a valid reason for preorders for big games that break the download servers, but the point still stands for bonuses fomo

That's why. Publishers use bonuses to lock in purchases early so people aren't swayed by launch reviews. They don't want people "verifying". It's just an excuse for fomo, all useful reasons don't actually apply anymore with wishlists and pre-downloads existing. It's all just one more sales tactic.
