Paper shows very small LLMs can match or beat larger ones through 'deep thinking' - evaluating different solution paths - and other tricks. Their 7B model beats o1-preview on complex math by exploring 64 different solutions & picking the best one.

Test-time compute paradigm seems really fruitful.

On the environmental cost of AI, this by @simonwillison.net w is useful. The models we use today have become orders of magnitude more efficient in the last year, and each prompt likely uses much less energy than many seem to think.

But the aggregate impact of ever-larger data centers is very real.
