We find temporal confounds in fMRI that emulate neural patterns of perceptual learning.

These can be hard to spot with conventional RSA, but may influence our understanding of how prior knowledge shapes perception.

We conclude that 'normal' age-related changes across the lifespan (i.e. decreases in visual function) alone are not enough to induce complex hallucinations, & therefore hallucinations in older adults may signal underlying pathology rather than being part of the normative ageing process

Older adults reported fewer complex hallucinations both in real time and retrospectively, w/ none of our measured sensory or cognitive factors mediating this effect

We measured the tendency to experience simple/complex hallucinations alongside measures which vary across the lifespan & are thought to be risk factors for hallucination proneness (visual function, perceptual reorganisation, imagery vividness, inhibitory control, suggestibility)
