But prelim results are that Gem Mining doesn't have very good uptake. The teachers seem to feel an obligation toward the progress/correctness focus while circulating, not much room for the shift to Gem Mining (or at least not based on just a simple nudge).

Hence the 5 Practices are VERY ambitious.

Yeah, we felt like Gem Mining could go pretty far and ultimately it is the big idea about centering students' thinking. But we also tried to make it very modest. Basically, instead of circulating to look for progress and correctness, try to look for some interesting student ideas ("gems").

Our Ed.D. program is up and running at Mizzou and it's excellent. It's fully online with a cohort of passionate educators who earn their doctorate within 3 years. Faculty are supportive and the work is designed to be handled on a part-time basis.
