In that class, Koizumi immediately recognized a link to his passions and experience that he had not expected. Koizumi had been educating himself in science policy since the mid-1980s through his work with ACT UP as they advocated for research funding to investigate HIV/AIDS.

Willy moved to Vertex Pharmaceuticals in 2018 and is currently their Senior Director of Toxicology and the Safety Site Head at their San Diego Research facility.

Willy earned a PhD in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from Indiana University School of Medicine, while working at Eli Lilly. Willy specialized in pharmaceutical toxicology and went on to lead a team focused on mechanistic toxicology, guiding the development of safer, more effective therapies.
