At this point my parents were also deeply involved. My dad, bless his heart, put on latex gloves and went through the trash cans. No box.

It is now the day after Thanksgiving. I still have no idea what happened to the rest of the butter.

The half stick was still in its dish, but the rest of the butter was gone. I emptied the fridge (no small effort, as its shelves groaned under the weight of my Thanksgiving hosting prep): no box. I checked all my cabinets (same deal as the fridge): no box. Countertop? Table? Coffee table?! No box.

The brownies were in the fridge for MORE THAN A YEAR???? dear god. was the hospital rom all the weed or from eating way-past-expiry brownies?

I should add that my parents are also phenomenal cooks…when it comes to Chinese food. My mom expertly wraps zongzi, my dad’s red-braised pork belly is amazing, etc. But back then, they were reading recipes in their second language and working without experience a lot of folks take for granted.

Notable incidents I can remember include:

-not realizing how long a turkey would take to defrost
-attempting to defrost the turkey in the oven
-flour lump gravy
-not realizing they were using premade pie filling instead of pumpkin puree
-baking said pie in a microwave oven with a busted turntable
