Long lives, poor health? A comprehensive review of the evidence among international migrants

Joe completed his PhD at @uniofstandrews.bsky.social in the area of migrant health and has been working for the past year on the massive @erc.europa.eu funded @migrantlife.bsky.social project. He's so good that he'll also remain involved in "Migrant Life" until 2026. (2/5)

@vergeles.bsky.social will be with us for a while. During her stay we will work closely together on a multi-country comparative paper focusing on migration, mortality, and inequality. (3/4)

@vergeles.bsky.social is completing a joint PhD between UCLouvain and VUB within the large-scale INEQKILL project (www.ineqkill.be). She has a Bachelor's degree in biological anthropology and Master's degree in demography. (2/4)
INEQKILL - How Inequality Kills
INEQKILL is an interdisciplinary research project on how inequality kills using all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Belgium (1800-2025).

In light of these fascinating patterns, and with absolute and relative proportions of migrants and their children substantial and rising in Sweden and elsewhere, we call for the separate monitoring of life expectancy in these groups in order to maximize potential future national gains in e0. (7/7)
para-mor-ukri.bsky.social
In the online supplementary materials, we add further nuance by looking at (a) the separate impact of children with one versus two migrant parents among the second-generation and (b) granular combinations of generation by origin by age impacts on national life expectancy in Sweden. (6/7)
para-mor-ukri.bsky.social
Finally, by specific origins, despite profound changes in the generation-level patterns, non-Western migrants always have a positive effect upon national e0 in Sweden, while Nordic migrants always have a negative effect. Among their children, all origins tend to negatively affect national e0. (5/7)
para-mor-ukri.bsky.social
Delving into these generational differences by age, the transformation in impact of migrants on national e0 from negative to positive is driven by young adult migrants. An increasingly negative impact of the children of migrants on national e0 is driven by infancy and young adulthood. (4/7)
para-mor-ukri.bsky.social
When we decompose these differences by generation we find interesting differences. An initial (larger) negative impact of migrants on national e0 reverses over time. Among the children of migrants, an initial (smaller) negative effect of migrants on national e0 grows over time. (3/7)
para-mor-ukri.bsky.social
In 1990, the combined life expectancy (e0) at birth of migrants and their children is lower than non-migrants, notably among men. This has a negative effect upon national e0 in Sweden. Over time, their e0 rises at a faster rate than non-migrants, leading to a reduction of these differences. (2/7)

In this PARA-MOR article recently published in #SocialScience&MedicinePopulationHealth, @sd.de and I aim to quantify and unpack the impact of the mortality patterns of migrants and the children of migrants on national life expectancy patterns and trends in Sweden. (1/7)

In this first *PARA-MOR* working paper @mjwdemography.bsky.social reviews evidence regarding whether international migrants are living longer lives in worse health. He outlines areas of agreement and controversy, future research directions, and policy recommendations. su.figshare.com/articles/pre...
