New from Michael Adams & 👋, in which we ask: after appearing to diverge when Canada chose Trudeau and the U.S. chose Trump in the late 2010s, are two countries now back on a path toward political and cultural convergence? 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 📈 📊#CanadianPolitics

Opinion: Are Canada and the United States now back on a path towards political and cultural convergence?
It would be a mistake to conclude that many Canadians now see what Donald Trump is promising to the U.S. as the economic, environmental and social solutions we need here as well

A clear majority of Canadians continues to feel very or somewhat optimistic that there will be meaningful reconciliation. Optimism among both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people has increased since this question was first asked in 2021.

About 7 in 10 Canadians say that individuals like themselves have a role to play in efforts to bring about reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. One in two say they feel strongly about their own role in the reconciliation process.

Two in three Canadians say they are either very or somewhat familiar with the history of Indian Residential Schools in Canada. There are signs that familiarity is gradually increasing over time.

41% of Canadian parents find parenting harder than expected, compared to 62% of American parents. And 23% of Canadians parents find parenting easier than expected, compared to only 8% of American parents.

A colleague on Substack flagged a Pew survey on parenting being harder than expected.

We have somewhat different results in Canada - the question is not exactly the same, but fairly close.

Yesterday, Statistics Canada reminded us that our society is getting older. Today, I ask: what are the implications of this for our political and public policy priorities?

We asked Canadians to 10 strategies for the country to pursue in addressing climate change.

This year’s results reflect a notable shift: the public is more likely to favour policies that protect jobs and the economy and less concerned with meeting carbon reduction targets.

Why I love tracking surveys: each year since 2022, there was a 6- or 7-pt drop in B.C. in the proportion agreeing that "protecting the environment is more important than protecting jobs" - significant each time, not a headline. But now we can report a 20-point drop over 3 yrs - that's a headline!

Seems a good time to remind people what the supporters of the different political parties actually think of the relationship between Parliament and the Supreme Court.
