What began as an unexpected color change years ago led us to a rare discovery: a metastable macrocycle with two Meisenheimer adducts, fueled by cyanide and stabilized by H-bonds.
A study from CINaM (@univ-amu.fr) & CEISAM (Nantes Univ), now OA in @angewandtechemie.bsky.social :

A tetranitroazacalixarene macrocycle captures cyanide reversibly via nucleophiloic aromatic substitution to form a metastable dianionic bis-Meisenheimer complex, with a color change of the solution from yellow to orange.

New chapter in the coupled polymethines story:
we explored anionic & neutral dyes, with exciting photophysics (e.g., pH-switching via spirocyclization of a dianionic species 🤯)
A joint study from CINaM (@univ-amu.fr) & CEISAM (Nantes Univ) labs, now OA in @orgchemfront.rsc.org:

A colorfoul scheme of anionic coupled polymethine dyes and their neutral precursors, uncovering a range of exciting photophysical behaviors: including ESIPT, photoacid emission, and NIR pH-switching.

Big congrats to Dr Yoann Cotelle (iSm2, Marseille) who brilliantly defended his HDR today, a great day for supramolecular chemistry, and a perfect reason to gather a remarkable jury !

How far can we push quinones into the NIR while keeping them ultra-light?
Our latest dye, synthesized by Tatiana Munteanu (CINaM, @univ-amu.fr) and modeled by Carmelo Naim (CEISAM, Nantes Univ.), reaches nearly 700 nm with MW < 300 Da!

Our latest work explores new reactivities of benzoquinone-monoimines, including the one-step synthesis of bis-zwitterionic macrocycles via transamination.

A joint study from @univ-amu.fr (CINaM), Nantes Université (CEISAM), & Univ. Politehnica of Bucharest.

This is the cover of the Journal J. Org. Chem. from January 2025. The cover juxtaposes the molecular structures of your bis-zwitterionic macrocycles against a stunning mountainous landscape, creating a striking symmetry. The molecular orbitals and bonds seem to mirror the rugged peaks and valleys of the mountains, suggesting a connection between the natural world and the precision of molecular design.
