To borrow a concept from @alexroy144.bsky.social, Ram retconning their EREV truck name to "REV" not only makes way more sense than "Ramcharger", it gives them a decent opportunity to take narrative command of the next big thing in hybrid propulsion in the U.S.

Chicago is a jewel and the L is a marvel. But we need to curb the disorder for everyone’s benefit. Every bar has a bouncer. We need uniformed staff to maintain the terms of service and keep the vibe civic.

We don’t always mean the same thing when we talk about reindustrialization. I’m tracking three different types of reindustrialization…and one red herring we should all avoid.

Three Types of Reindustrialization
And One Phony Type There’s a lot of excitement these days about reindustrialization. As Austin Bishop relays in a recent Tool or Die episode, simple plans for a 50-person meetup last year turned into ...

Ukraine destroyed about $7b in Russian aircraft with a drone attack. Not reported is the lead time to replace those aircraft, which is probably more important.
Russia sowed the wind. Now they reaped the whirlwind.

I love telling people I drive a nuclear powered truck. Illinois’ nuclear grid is a treasure.
Another day in paradise
⚛️⚡️ Over the last 24 hours, enough nuclear energy was available to supply 117% of overall electricity demand in northern Illinois.

⏰ Nuclear plants could meet all electricity demand 100% of the last 24 hours.

Today I revisited This is Water, the commencement address by David Foster Wallace. I come back to it every 1-2 years. Empathy, society, and thoughtfulness are always in demand, but I think now especially.

Anyone using the term NPC unironically should probably listen twice.

Yes, I do drive a nuclear powered truck. It’s great.
Chicago was 100% nuclear 93% of the days in 2024*

(*Mark Z. Jacobson methodology)
How did the Northern Illinois grid perform in 2024?

⚡️ Electricity consumed: 93 TWh
⚛️ Estimated nuclear generation: 89 TWh
⏰ Nuclear generation exceeded load 47% of the time
📅 Nuclear generation exceeded load on 338 days

Eight years ago, Elon Musk claimed Teslas would be capable of driving coast-to-coast without human intervention by the end of 2017.

I once told Jim Womack I was reading The Machine that Changed the World. He said “I don’t know why people still read that. We’ve written such better things since then.”
Hey, thanks! The Toyota Way by Jeff Liker 2nd Edition gives Ludicrous a shout out, and was already the core text. The Machine That Changed The World by Womack et al, and Evolution of A Manufacturing System At Toyota by Takahiro Fujimoto are both worth reading too
@niedermeyer.io I read Ludicrous recently. Great work, and an excellent starting point for any newly minted Elon sceptics. I found the contrast between manufacturing at Tesla and Toyota really interesting - can you recommend any books on Toyota?
