Men are extremely keen to explain to me that Britain *needs* a domestic steel production plant and doesn't necessarily *need* universities. Okay. Steel contributed about £1.7bn to the UK economy in 2024. Universities contributed more than £200bn.

Spent the week introducing northwestern Yucatan lowland #Maya agro-urban landscapes from #archaeology to current #urbanism to ULB #landscapearchitecture using #gis #hgis #urbandata #maps on the #builtenvironment focusing on #landuse patterns. Proud how far they've come. @ulbrecherche.bsky.social
Precolonial Maya urbanism on the dry tropical karstic plains of northwest Yucatán. Often precolonial Maya urban landscapes are perceived as low density, however this changes perspective when considering the intensity of using and managing land resources within the urban built environment, maintaining productive and co-dependent relationships with the environment. Examples of vernacular architecture and cultivatable plots remain in satellite cities and the periurban landscape. The historical urbanism based on urban form introduced with Spanish colonial occupation on the dry tropical karstic plains of northwest Yucatán (with examples of vernacular architectural appropriation in colonial times) The historical city and colonial forms become adapted into cosmopolitan contemporary Mérida on the dry tropical karstic plains of northwestern Yucatán. New architectural forms are often inspired by colonial rather than indigenous practices, except for the reintroduction of local materials. Short description of the week's programme.

I recently wrote a short blog post for Historica.org. I explore some possibilities about how AI can assist in the exploration and analysis of historical collections. It’s not about replacing traditional methods but expanding our toolkit for understanding the past. I hope you like it! #AI #DH

I sometimes paint in my spare time. One of the things I love about it is the feeling of being able to manifest what is in my imagination 🌈 So, this painting is called 'The geographer'. I made it for a friend and colleague that has been my mentor and a great model of what academia should be. Ian, 🙏🏼

This is so important...People are not #data. In creating datasets for historical #BigData or large scale analyses we need to do carefully thought data capture design and come back to close reading. #AI #ML #DigitalHumanities

✨ Centering Humanity Beyond the Data ✨

How do we relate to data that identifies a specific enslaved person? Jamelle Bouie warns that digital tools risk "abstracting the human reality away from the story." This caution is crucial for those working with historical archives.

Unveiling a Complex Legacy

Hernando de Pizarro & Sebastián de Benalcázar shaped the conquest of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, & more—but their involvement in Indigenous trafficking reveals a darker legacy.

What's in an attention head? 🤯

We present an efficient framework – MAPS – for inferring the functionality of attention heads in LLMs ✨directly from their parameters✨

patymurrieta.bsky.social
Hola!

Español-Latin-Nahuatl).

Doesn't matter how much companies say they aim to 'adress' biases in LLMs. If data is white, male, middle age, Western, and from the global north, it's impossible to claim generative AI holds solutions for all. How would decolonial technologies look like if we dared to try?

🔍 New research reveals a concerning trend: AI training data is increasingly concentrated in Big Tech's hands.

- 70% of data for both speech and image data sets comes from YouTube
- 90% of the data sets analyzed comes from North America & Europe.

This data concentration shapes the future of AI.
