Entire populations live surrounded by trash and just generally don't clean up the environment. Then westerners criticize it. But the reason they are living like that is that their connection to their land was severed by colonialists. So the fault lies with colonialists, not the local people.

Something that doesn't get talked about a lot is that a lot of Indigenous people in other countries were torn away from their land, which they had been living on, and taught colonialist values around not taking care of their land.

I know this is the case in much of Latin America.
