Nice bit of work for Albert Pierrepoint - he was able to buy a pub with the money he made out of executing Nazis!

That is utterly disgraceful!

Yes attempting an invasion by crossing the channel, given the strength of the Royal Navy would have been a mugs game. An invasion of the Irish republic and an invasion of Britain using that as a stepping stone might have been more practical

...and if the RAF had not inflicted such damage on the Luftwaffe during the battle of Britain, Germany might have invaded the UK.

WWII is full of 'what ifs' as is every other major conflict. Given enough time, the 3rd Reich might have developed an atomic bomb - that would have been decisive!

"The Great Escape" is a very well known example - the story of an actual escape from a prisoner of war camp that really did happen. Except that, despite there being a number of Hollywood stars in the movie, there were no americans in the camp in question.

A fact of life is that the US did not win WWII, if anyone 'won', it was the Soviet Union!

Also a fact of life is that the US has either lost or at best drawn every war it has fought since.

It's a waste of time replying to you if you are that ignorant!

The UK (& empire) was the only country in the war fighting Germany / Italy from the first day to the last

That would be a very ugly thing to say if it were true, which it isn't. Britain and its empire held the line for years, before the US finally got dragged in, kicking and screaming. The Soviet Union did far more to win the war than the US ever did.

Well, yes it was significantly better when the UK was a member of the EU!

I was educated in the UK but since then I have lived in 5 other countries. I have noticed social cohesiveness in most of those countries that the UK doesn't have. This may well be because people there have been trained to think. I have recently started reading some philosophy - makes my brain hurt

It is, I think, atypical of France that the Louvre was protected by a security system that was absolutely YEARS out of date. The French usually have the latest & best in hardware.

It reminds me that the US ICBM systems were until very recently run by computer systems that used floppy disks!

Critical thinking in the guise of 'philosophy', has been a core curriculum subject in France and in many other continental European countries since the year dot. This may be why social cohesion is much better in many European countries than it is in the UK.

I think prospective governments, especially Labour ones, promising not to raise taxes is complete foolishness!
November 5, 2025 at 9:43 AM
...which makes reform as economically illiterate as the tories and to some extent Labour!

Huge economies like the UK do not work like corner shops or like a household's budget so unfortunately sucking money out of the economy actually makes things worse not better!

France has the right idea - they removed the rich completely - around 1789
