A sad result over at Mastodon, really. What could be changed in the mathematical community in order to get a different outcome?

Thanks for your reply. It's great to hear that the #illustratingMath community is so welcoming, especially to self-taught enthusiasts. I'm curious; I’ll have a look at it!

Do you feel that the mathematics community is welcoming to enthusiasts who are self-taught or do not have formal mathematics education?

1. Yes, very welcoming.
2. Somewhat welcoming.
3. Somewhat unwelcoming.
4. No, not welcoming at all.

The mathematics community includes people from many backgrounds, including self-taught learners and those without formal education. While many parts of the community are supportive, some environments may feel exclusive. Please share your experiences.

Hi everyone! I’ve been maintaining a math blog as part of my self-study journey, and I’m curious—do math blogs still matter to readers? What kind of content do you find most helpful or engaging? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Thank you for the comment! Yes, I’m aware these are permutations since order matters in arranging books on a shelf. I appreciate the clarification because it's a common point of confusion, and it's great to highlight the difference for anyone reading the post.

Migrating my blog from Jekyll to Material for MkDocs. It’s still a work in progress, but with the current amount of content, it’s more of a gentle nudge than a full-on move. Excited to tap into better Markdown support, sleek theming, and improved docs features.

An overdue call to reflect on what math truly is and at the same time a beautifully written modern day love letter to one of humanity’s deepest endeavors. This invites us to move beyond the noisy “AI will replace this & that” chatter. Please repost!

Today is Sept 20. On this date in 1996 mathematician Paul Erdős passed away. One of the most prolific mathematicians of the 20th century. Pursued problems in discrete mathematics, graph theory, number theory, and probability theory. My personal Erdős number is 4.

AI should be a tool to augment human understanding, but its use depends on how humans design and govern it.

Especially within the intersection of AI and formalized mathematics (e.g., Lean, Rocq), it seems possible for AI to assist significantly. But then a frightening thought occurs to me: what if AI is not willing to share its mathematical knowledge with humans?

Thinking about the question—assuming for simplicity that all of mathematics is a finite (though I believe it is infinite) body of knowledge, both discovered and invented—I guess that without AI, progress would take much longer than with AI.

Tell your Italian friends: I'm speaking at two events in Italy a week from now:

A public event in Rome Sep 27 related to the Italian edition of my book: www.associazionetokalon.com/matematica-p...

Then at the Global Math Summit in Cagliari on Oct 1: www.globalmathsummit.com
Excited about both!

Mathematics to me is a mental oasis—a place of clarity, structure, and creativity.
