so I moved on the one where Archer meets Lana's parents. Still stressful, but not something I need to worry about anymore.

I'm anxious about an upcoming trip away from my kids, so I watched Archer for comfort. The episode was about getting trapped in an elevator (one of phobias). I skipped it, and the next was about Lana leaving her baby and being anxious. I skipped, and the next was about their plane getting shot down

Manchester was the first terror attack against Jews on British soil in three decades. Yet sadly it did not come as a surprise

also, funnily, I had to fight w/ admissions to get a brochure from them. They also refused to let me join a campus tour when I just started. It's a tightly-run ship.

I know a lot of secondary educators have students reach out to Profs for projects, but I wish they'd be a little more cognizant of our time, esp. when they're asking me to buy stuff for them.

last year I got a letter from a middle schooler-they had a class project on college to inspire them. They asked if I could send a UVM shirt and admissions materials. Not sure why they wrote to me, but feeling nice I did it. Just got the exact same letter from the same school #academicsky

yeah, that's the company. I feel like the Chronicle should do some investigating.

my University hired a travel service to do things that we used to do ourselves with an added fee. And today I found out that when I book a trip for multiple people, unless I pay more *on top of* that added fee we are put on different reservations. Who makes these deals? #academicsky

I can see a benefit in a "hands across the water" type event, like playing in the USSR during the Cold War. But this was so controlled by the regime it can't be framed as a goodwill/cultural understanding type thing

and yes, it's fair to be skeptical of Netanyahu's sincerity on this, but that also just means you should work with Israelis opposed to him
pehenne.bsky.social
of course implicit in some's hesitation to do this is a rejection of Israel itself. I saw some reactions to the potential peace deal that even if it stops the fighting, famine, the occupation will continue (the plan calls for that, so I assume they meant Israel's existence)

this is why current attempts to isolate and shame Israel won't have the effect people think. Much better approach is to build coalitions with Israelis who are unhappy with Netanyahu, as I've argued.

I mostly have my chronic #migraine under control, except for periods where I'm stuck in an attack, and now is one of those periods. Even though I know I'll get out of it, it does weigh on you-you wonder if you'll ever be able to function normally again

people may still question this deal, it may never go into effect, but it does represent pressure on Netanyahu, him giving in.

I was talking with a Middle East studies expert after Trump was elected, and said that his desire to be a deal-maker may override his base's support for Netanyahu's Israel. The expert basically laughed, bc Trump is apparently too beholden to US evangelicals. I kind of think I was right.

a student brought in some apples for me today (it's apple picking season in VT). I feel like a real teacher.

UVM Political Science was excited to host @sarahemclaugh.bsky.social of FIRE to discuss authoritarianism in higher education (based on her new book). I failed in my hosting duties and didn't get a picture of her in action but she took a nice pic of our Dewey Lounge

as part of my looming midlife crisis, I want to start going by a nickname. Something like Burt Reynolds as Gator. ChatGPT suggested Razor Colt, Rex and Stingray. I'm also considering Razor Crest, since I play Star Wars Legion and frequently use Din Jarin.

and I should note I don't believe in the Rapture because it is--ironically given evangelicals' supposed devotion to Biblical literalism--not really in the Bible. Here is a good take from an Anglican perspective

Are we going to be raptured away someday? Is that an actual Christian belief? Hollywood says yes…or at least they think it might make a good action story. Anglican Pastor writer Thomas McKenzie has ad...
