Well, maybe so! But as someone else noted, there are already procedures in place to allow students to contest a grade. What we're looking at is bad actors going outside of current structures to attack individuals, which can happen wherever students interface with university workers.

We need to know who is vulnerable among us and how we can protect them so they can continue to do their work with integrity.

This is not a "grading essays on controversial topics" problem.

This is a "protecting our colleagues from bad actors" problem.

Researchers who have been doxxed for their academic work have been shouting this for years: we need a plan to protect ourselves from concerted, politically motivated attacks on individuals. We need this at the grassroots level, at the departmental level, at the institutional level.

I think I understand your point. That might work, if we assume the student is acting in good faith. And that is really really hard to believe.
