“You don’t know who people are online. If you see somebody post a call for an ‘eye for an eye’, for example, you know they could be an American who is airing a reprehensible viewpoint, or they could be a foreign influence agent trying to deepen division.” - NLP's @peteradams.bsky.social @edweek.org

No need to be patronizing here. We disagree. Thanks for the back-and-forth.
peteradams.bsky.social
Honestly don't see this piece as doing that, so it seems we'll have to disagree on that. Certainly nothing in this piece worthy of writing off the AP as a news source entirely. (Interestingly, many conservatives feel that the AP is unmistakably biased against Trump. A view I also don't agree with.)
peteradams.bsky.social
I must have missed that coverage. Can you share a link?
peteradams.bsky.social
E.g. if you were to go to www.propublica.org, or www.pbs.org/newshour/ or apnews.com (to name a few possibilities) right now, you may well find important reporting that didn't find its way into your algorithmically-controlled social media feed.
Investigative Journalism and News in the Public Interest
ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.

Are there news organizations (local, national, international) whose reporting you find to be honest, in pursuit of the truth, fair, accurate and free of obvious bias? If so, you can 1) download their apps and get notifications 2) make opening that app part of your media diet/routine.
peteradams.bsky.social
I don't think the public is losing access to social media where, agreed, lots of links to high quality journalism are shared. But one can also find journalists (and entire newsrooms) doing hard-hitting news by going straight to where they publish/broadcast their reporting.
peteradams.bsky.social
Agree that paywalls can be a barrier for folks who want to consistently read a lot of coverage across many different news orgs, but loads of legit, standards-based orgs have no paywall or have a soft paywall.

This begs the question: since journalism costs $ to produce, how should it be paid for?
peteradams.bsky.social
Thousands of really hard-working and underpaid journalists report on important things in communities across America every single day. I think we are remiss to forget that.
peteradams.bsky.social
And what is the business/ownership model of these non-U.S. news orgs?

If only there were ways other than turning to social media to stay informed …

“Ideological actors, trolls, propagandists, people who are looking to divide Americans, to push misinformation, are all going to jump into the void of that curiosity gap where an event has happened, & everyone wants more details than are available.” - @peteradams.bsky.social

There were initial reports of someone being taken into custody after the Kirk shooting, but NYT is reporting police have said the detainee wasn't the shooter. So we literally know nothing about the shooter and their motives. Any speculation is bullshit, and treat this as a source credibility moment.

❌ NO: This is not a real photo of European politicians & heads of state waiting with clasped hands in a hallway for President Donald Trump during peace talks on the Russia-Ukraine War.

It's AI. Avoid falling for such fakes by vetting the source & searching for other pics.

Seems unnecessary to take a cheap swipe at journalists (most of whom actually have a lot of integrity) in this take about Colbert.
