I’m reading @graemethomson.bsky.social’s excellent biography of Kate Bush, Under The Ivy, and am moved by this bit where she’s *still at school* and her dad plays the unreleased Man With The Child In His Eyes for a caller at the farm.

I'm thrilled that Upon A White Horse is going to be Radio 4's Book Of The Week. The first episode, which is on Stonehenge, will be on December 8 at 11.45am – and then there will be a reading from a different part of the book every day up to and including December 12. I hope you'll enjoy listening.

Glasgow is having one of those mornings when the sky and stone create works of art wherever you look.

“Ross is not just writing about a specific place or feature, but the people associated with it. It’s a gallimaufry of encounters.”
I’m delighted that Upon A White Horse has been included in @scotsman.com’s Books of 2025.

Delighted that Upon A White Horse has made it into the Financial Times’s Books of 2025. The full list is in this weekend’s paper. Many thanks to Tom Robbins for choosing my book.

I had the great good fortune to meet Budge, the @norwichcathedral.bsky.social cat, during my visit today. A fine fellow, is he not?

The English leg of my book tour begins on Saturday with a sold-out event in Sheffield. Tickets remain for the other dates: Guildford, Dorchester, Bath, Norwich & Whitby. I'm also doing a special London event in the evening of October 20, as part of @stoneclub.bsky.social. Please do come, if you can.

Popped into Govan Old. The Pictish sarcophagus is looking great. I signed my books in their excellent gift shop. Perhaps pick up a Christmas present while helping @govanstones.bsky.social fundraising?

So, I'm watching Sally Wainwright's excellent Riot Women – and, astonishingly, Joanna Scanlan's character has a copy of my book Daunderlust. I'd LOVE to know how the heck that has come about.

Lovely to see Upon A White Horse in the autumnal window of Waterstones on Sauchiehall Street. There should still be signed copies inside, I think.

It hardly seems possible, given that Capacity exists in the world, but I’m beginning to think that this is the best Big Thief album.

“A beautifully written book of traces and absences.” Many thanks to Stuart Kelly and Scotland on Sunday for this thoughtful review of Upon A White Horse. Great to share the pages with @megaheid.bsky.social

Great to pick up a copy of @megaheid.bsky.social’s An Inconvenience Of Penguins at the book’s Glasgow launch. I think we can all agree that is an all-time great author photo.

Happy publication day to @megaheid.bsky.social, whose book An Inconvenience of Penguins is newly hatched. Great title, great concept – travelling the world to see all eighteen species of penguin – and a great story. I hope the book, unlike its daft wee earthbound subjects, takes flight.

If anyone in Glasgow or Edinburgh would like a signed copy of Upon A White Horse, there are copies in Waterstones on Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street, Princes Street and at the Braehead shopping centre. Blackwell’s on South Bridge and Topping on Blenheim Place also have a few.
