Indeed. And the rising Mediterranean sea temperatures provide extra fuel for more extreme rainfall at this time of year.

I feel I maintain a reasonable balance - yes garden ornamentals but organic/wild areas/diverse multi-level planting/perennials left standing overwinter. Plus conservation volunteering work for a much bigger landscape scale impact.

Gardens can provide great habitat without being purist 'native only' spaces. My verbena bonariensis, hailing from South America, were alive with butterflies, bumblebees, and hoverflies this summer. Specialists aside, RHS has found most nectar/pollen feeders happy with either.

A lot of it is to do with regional land use, and particularly livestock. For sheep, you need a good solid barrier at the bottom of the hedge to stop lambs getting through, while for cattle it needs to be taller and more robust.

Tiree's data did go out, although the Met Office website has 102 mph - would be the joint strongest wind gust at Tiree on record. #StormAmy

Yes, I've strategically moved a few pots into more sheltered positions.

#StormAmy is knocking on the door - or maybe blowing the door open and marching on through!

The white/yellow area shows where wind gusts may exceed 100mph.

I should be able to get hold of the Reading Uni figures, which is the closest reliable site to me.
