I think success of K8S proves that a set of well defined APIs can drive and accelerate an innovative ecosystem. But maybe there the core concept was better understood, and coming up with the right abstractions was easier. But that's the way I think, standardize the interfaces/abstractions.

100% this. I Have some ideas to optimize part of this, but no interest to start to tinker with any closed system. Where to even start?

I think wasm would be fine with agents (that are fine with just few interfaces like http). But ecosystem of tooling available for operating system is just different scale than what is available in wasm (there is some work to port for example gnu coreutils but how useful that is, IDK).
