They both hate it, but Ves is pretty good at it, and Kalais is very much not:
Ves is naturally charming, clever and good at whitty conversation and thinly veiled insults. So after many hours of etiquette and dance lessons with Josephine and Vivienne, he did extremely well at the Winter Palace. He was internally screaming most of the time at the pettiness, though, and preferred sneaking around trying to catch the assassin. The only bit of the ball that he enjoyed was dancing with Bull at the end of the evening and probably causing several scandals in the process. Kalais would be terrible at the Game. He's not subtle and doesn't play nice with people who are cruel and/or arrogant, even if it's for diplomatic reasons. If he'd had to do a quest like WEWH, he would have snapped back at the first person who insulted one of his friends or a servant, and probably caused enough trouble to get himself kicked out.

Both Ves and Kalais have good relationships with their parents/people that raised them.

More details in the images below.
I haven't decided exactly what happens yet, but when Ves is 2 or 3 his parents (along with some other members of Clan Lavellan) are killed. Ves doesn't remember his bio parents & was raised by Keeper Deshanna and her husband Mihren. He has a good relationship with them. Mihren taught him how to fight & his tempest skills. He wanted Ves to follow him as the clan's lead hunter/warleader but encouraged him to find his own path when Ves no longer felt like he belonged with the clan after disbanding the Inquisition. Ves never calls them 'mum & dad' but he has a great love and respect for them both and considers them family. Kalais has a great relationship with his parents. He's especially close with his mother, Halestia. As Kalais is the youngest, she maybe babies him a little bit but she's always encouraged him to be himself & follow his dreams even if it leads him away from the clan. Her 'do no harm but take no shit' attitude is something he tries to emulate. His father, Darashahl'en, is a herbalist and whilst Kalais was never very good at sitting through his lessons on plants he got all his basic alchemy knowledge from him. Fond memories of taking part in Dalish customs with his father as a kid is a big part of why Kalais is so proud of his heritage. Kalais misses his parents and the rest of his family a lot during the events of Veilguard & wonders if he should have never left to join the Veil Jumpers.

I couldn't decide between Bull and Davrin. (And yes the answer of Ves or Kalais applies respectively.)

Bull = that really soft look on his face the first time he calls Ves Kadan.

Davrin = any time he gets protective of Assan or refers to himself as Assan's dad. Also ⬇️

I've done a couple of little Dragon Age related sketches that turned out nice this month so figured I'd re-post them for #DAFanFriday

Ves doesn't fear magic but he has a healthy respect for it. He was raised by his clan's Keeper, two of his closest friends (Clan Lavellan's First Belavahn & Dorian) are mages, and his kid has some magical talent, so Ves has always been surrounded by magic despite not being a mage himself. He knows it can be dangerous in the wrong hands and thinks mages should be properly taught how to control it, but doesn't agree that the circle necessarily does this the right way (or that all the clans handle things in the best way either). As far as Ves is concerned magic is a tool or a weapon. Just because someone can use it doesn't make them a bad person, in the same way that wielding a sword doesn't. He's more concerned with how and why someone is using that weapon. However, tactically, on the battlefield he's going after enemy mages first as they have the potential to do the most damage. Kalais doesn't really know much about magic. Neither he nor any one close to him growing up were a mage, so it was something he had little interest in or experience with. Since joining the Veil Jumpers he met several mages but other than a few curious questions still hasn't found out much about using magic. Magical artefacts, traps, anomalies, enchanted items, however he's become much more familiar with. His time in Arlathan has taught him how to safetly handle, disarm, avoid and dodge anything that he can deal with as a non-mage. Kalais understands these things can be very dangerous, and after that one artefact blew up in his face he is a little more cautious around magic, but the wierd stuff is what makes exploring the ancient ruins exciting. Kalais hates that many mages are oppressed and would stand up for them the same he would with any other marginalised group in Thedas. He judges individuals on their actions not whether they happen to have been born with magic etc.

This was Kalais' towards the end of the game. It's mostly focused on electric damage, weak point damage, momentum gain, and not running out of arrows.

Kalais is a Veil Ranger Rogue.

He mostly favours the electric damage created by the bow he found in a ruin in Arlathan but also enjoys mixing his own poisons and other alchemical agents for his arrowheads. If there's an opportunity to be a bit flashy or show off whilst shooting he will take it.

My boys are both Dalish but have different approaches to what that means for them:
Ves was raised to follow clan Lavellan's Dalish beliefs and practices. He believed in the creators and his faith was important to him. Seeing the mosaics in the elven ruins that suggest everything he believed may be a lie really messes him up. After the events of Tresspasser, Ves isn't sure what he believes in anymore and can't work out how he feels about his faith for a long time. Ghilan'nain and Elgar'nan appsaring in Veilguard would have been 100 times worse for him if he hadn't already seen those mosaics, but it was still hard for him to accept. He gradually starts to be able to reclaim a few bits of his culture by dissasociating them from the truth about the evanuris. But it's not until he gets a chance to speak to Kalais (who has always believed the Dalish and their traditions are now their own new, separate thing from whatever happened in ancient Elvehnan) that Ves starts to feel comfortable seeing himself Dalish again. Kalais is atheist, but practices Dalish traditions secularly. For example he has Vallaslin, done as per his clan's ritual, but it is not dedicated to a god. He got his love of his people's culture from his father, who's family have belonged to their clan for many generations. His father believes in the creators and encouraged Kalais and his sisters to learn about their Dalish heritage. However Kalais' mother was born into slavery in Tevinter. She didn't belive in the Maker because she didn't like the idea that he would let people suffer like her family did, and when she learnt there were supposedly elven gods it seemed even worse that they would allow their people to be enslaved, so she didn't believe in them either. Neither parent forced Kalais or his sisters to believe their viewpoint so each of them grew up to form their own ideas on whether to follow the gods or not.

Got some snazzier looking images to beat the character limit this time.
Ves didn't have feelings for any of the other companions as he's Aromantic (which is why falling for Bull caught him by surprise). He was definitely attracted to a lot of them though. Ves and Dorian almost had a thing but Ves stopped it before it went too far as he got the feeling Dorian wanted more than just casual and that was not something he could offer. Kalais had crushes on Taash and Emmrich. I wouldn't say they were completely urequited but it was obvious fairly qickly that there were things that made them not compatible. When Bellara confessed she had feelings for him Kalais felt bad because he never meant to lead her on, it was unintentional. He really likes Bellara but only ever saw her as a friend and like a sister. He hated having to turn her down.

I'm so glad I gave this game a second chance in the run-up to Veilguard's release. I had so much fun playing it. I love my reluctant but determined Inquisitor.

He knew he had a massive romantic crush on him shortly after Weishaupt and it broke his heart a little when, during a casual conversation, Davrin revealed that he tries to avoid emotional attachments. As he's Demi the emotional connection and romance is what Kalais wants in a relationship (anything more physical is a bonus of it happens) so he thought there was no way they'd be anything more than friends. But the more time they spent together the more Kalais fell for him and when Davrin admitted he had feelings for him too he only fell harder. Whilst they were on a job during the events of DATV Kalais got badly injured and the next job they did together when he was healed Davrin was too overprotective and told him not to be so reckless. To Kalais this sounded like Davrin thought he was too much (like other people had previously) which upset him. But later, through his trust in Kalais to get them out of a tricky situation, and his apology, Davrin reassured Kalais that he thought he was amazing exactly as he is. That was the moment Kalais knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Davrin. Ves had never fallen in love with anyone romantically before. He didn't think it was something he was capable of or wanted. So it took him a while to identify his feelings for Bull. All he knew was that Bull created a safe space where he didn't have the pressure of being the Inquisitor and he was a person not a title. After Bull was made Tal Vashoth, Ves tried to comfort him and there was more of an emotional connection between them than normal (I headcanon their FWB thing started before this). That was when he started to realise something was different, but it took some of Cole's unique insight and a lot of teasing from Dorian and Sera before he realised that what was happening was that he was falling in love. Then he had a crisis because he thought Bull was like him and didn't want or feel love in that way. So it took him even longer before he worked up the courage to admit his feelings to Bull.

Probably this doofus. Kalais is the first OC I was brave enough to start yapping about on here, so he's probably the one most people associate with me. He also gets the most comments saying how cute he is.

A few months after Kalais joined the Veil Jumpers, he was sent with a team to investigate an unstable artefact. Whilst they were dealing with it, the artefact exploded and some shards of it cut Kalais' face. He was lucky not to lose his eye.

He also has a scar on the front and back of his right...

Completely forgot to add this originally but, Kalais' favourite thing about his appearance is probably his tattoos. Most of them have some kind of significance/meaning to him & he likes how they look. He has quite a few, and I've designed him several more (or altered existing ones) in my headcanon
