In this work we discovered that during metamophosis there is a remodeling of Zebrafish Cardinal Vein followed by a replacement with the Inferior Vena Cava. This process mirrors the Human Inferior Vena Cava development, demostrating a  conserved mechanism  through  the mammals.  In this panel all the steps of Inferior Vena Cava formation (blood vascular marker, kdrl in green).

Functionally, we demostrated that transition from CV to IVC represents a shift from a multifunctional embryonic vein to a specialized adult conduit adapted for high-volume blood return.
Here one of the functional divergence between CV and IVC. Rhodamine Dextran 10KDA is internalized by the embryonic cardinal vein ( fig. I, yellow arrowheads) but not by the IVC (fig.J) indicating that IVC lack the scavenger function characteristic of their CV counterparts!

We found that this vein-to-vein process is regulated by vegfa/flt1/dll4 axis.

Using lineare tracing tool we demostrated that IVC arise only from the venous source with no contribution of the #Artery or #lymphatic
In this panel, “flibow”  tool was used to study the cellular original of the inferior Vena Cava. Venous sprouts from the cardinal vein ( fig. D, magenta arrowhead)  give rise to the Inferior Vena Cava (fig. F, magenta arrowhead)  .
