Worth noting that the same day these negotiations to ditch day one rights to claim unfair dismissal were going on (Monday), No 10 told us they would "overturn all attempts to scupper these plans, including watering down day one protection from unfair dismissal".

Would mean difficult decisions about how to allocate those cuts or - as @stuarthoddinott.bsky.social suggests is more likely - a return to Tory approach of pencilling in fantasy spending numbers to hit fiscal rules, before topping up closer to time.

It comes after our @jessicaelgot.bsky.social revealed that criminals will be stopped from “gaming the system” by choosing trial by jury to increase chances of proceedings collapsing - and that govt was planning radical changes to limit jury trials by next election.
