I’d say those are the archetypes but obviously it varies a lot from person to person.

Christmas dinner: either a nice meal with the immediate family or basically a cocktail party with extended family. Could be any meal, often brunch. Food tends to be more reasonable and varies more. Greater tendency to normal family discussions and politics.

Thanksgiving: harvest potluck feast. As many people as you can fit around a table. Focused on food and company. The food is all heavy and there’s way too much of it. Lots of spices. Everyone eats too much and crashes out and reminisces together.
