MILLENNIALS AND ZOOMERS GREW UP IN A SYNAGOGUE CULTURE THAT HAS, IN MY EXPERIENCE, DONE A SUBPAR JOB TEACHING JEWISH HISTORY. MY OWN JEWISH EDUCATION SKEWED HEAVILY TOWARD ASHKENAZI/EASTERN EUROPEAN EXPERIENCES, MADE STORIES OF OPPRESSION AND THE HOLOCAUST A CENTRAL POINT OF OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND GLOSSED OVER THE COMPLEX HISTORY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL.

AND WHILE I DON'T THINK SOCIAL MEDIA ITSELF IS A CAUSE OF THE SHIFT IN YOUNG JEWISH ATTITUDES, THE FACT THAT WE ARE MUCH MORE ONLINE THAN PREVIOUS GENERATIONS HAS DOUBTLESSLY AFFECTED OUR VIEWS. FOR ONE THING, IT IS EASIER THAN EVER TO TALK DIRECTLY TO PALESTINIANS.

GEN Z HAS NEVER KNOWN AN "UNDERDOG ISRAEL.”

MILLENNIALS AND GEN Z WERE BORN INTO A WORLD WHERE NOT ONLY DOES ISRAEL EXIST, IT'S A MIGHTY NATION WITH ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED MILITARIES IN THE WORLD. IT HAS THE UNSHAKING BACKING OF THE UNITED STATES FINANCIALLY AND POLITICALLY, AND HAS RECEIVED LITTLE - IF ANY - PUSHBACK FOR THEIR ACTIONS.

BOOMERS REMEMBER THE SIX DAY WAR AND THE YOM KIPPUR WAR, TWO CONFLICTS THAT WERE A REAL THREAT TO ISRAEL'S EXISTENCE. MILLENNIALS REMEMBER THE 2ND INTIFADA, IN WHICH HUNDREDS OF ISRAELIS WERE
MURDERED BY TERRORISTS. MANY OF US REMEMBER PRIME MINISTER YITZHAK RABIN'S ASSASSINATION.

BUT GEN Z ONLY KNOWS AN ISRAEL WITH AN ENTRENCHED RIGHT
WING GOVERNMENT MORE INTERESTED IN UPHOLDING AN UNJUST STATUS QUO THAN ACHIEVING TRUE PEACE. GAZA HAS BEEN UNDER BLOCKADE SINCE 2006. THE OCCUPATION OF THE WEST BANK STARTED DECADES BEFORE THAT. THEY'VE ONLY KNOWN AN ISRAEL AT ODDS WITH THEIR BASIC MORALS.

MADE A CENTRAL PART OF MY JEWISH EDUCATION. WHEN JEWISH JOY WAS INCLUDED, IT WAS USUALLY FRAMED AROUND SURVIVAL - MOST OFTEN FROM AN ASHKENAZI PERSPECTIVE. WHERE WAS THE JEWISH JOY THAT CAME FROM WITHIN? WHERE WAS THE BRILLIANT, OFTEN HUMOROUS, TALMUDIC EPHEMERA THAT MADE US SO UNIQUE AS PEOPLE OF SCRIPTURE? WHERE WAS THE MYSTICISM SO CAREFULLY GUARDED BY OUR ANCESTORS?

IF ALL WE KNOW IS OPPRESSION, THEN THE SAFEGUARD OF ISRAEL MUST BE DEFENDED AT ALL COSTS. JEWISH YOUTH ARE TAUGHT TO SUPPORT ZIONISM NOT AS A COMPLEX POLITICAL MOVEMENT, BUT AS PART OF THE EXISTENTIAL STRUGGLE AGAINST THE WIDER WORLD'S ANTISEMITISM.

SO WHEN THEY LEARN FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT THE NAKBA, AND THE HARSH REALITIES OF LIVING UNDER OCCUPATION, ZIONISM MORPHS FROM A MOVEMENT FOR THE SELF-DETERMINATION OF AN OPPRESSED PEOPLE TO AN OPPRESSIVE, RIGHT WING IDEOLOGY THAT WAS ALWAYS INVESTED IN ETHNIC DISPLACEMENT.
