South Korea agreed to invest $350B in the US in exchange for lower tariffs on cars.

But moving that much money abroad could destabilize Korea's currency. And if their currency becomes too unstable, the tariff deal pauses.

How does Seoul solve this? koreapro.org/2025/11/curr...

FYI: law and science, political science, and sociology all still have DDRIG programs run outside of the NSF but funded by NSF. The rest of these programs unfortunately do not.

I run the political science DDRIG.
NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

There is understandably a great deal of interest in fighting populism. I share the normative aspiration.
Yet the more I think about it, the more I find myself drawn to a more pessimistic interpretation. The latter may well be wrong. But articulating it helps clarify whether there are strong grounds
Very much looking forward to presenting this slide deck tomorrow at the Europe Workshop of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation!
I’ve tried to offer a balanced and accessible overview of the scholarly debates on the causes and consequences of right-wing populism, as well as the

Chinese tourists in Taiwan are currently mostly composed of Chinese citizens living overseas visiting Taiwan proper and of Mainland Chinese citizens visiting Matsu & Kinmen. A limited number of individual travelers also manage to visit Taiwan proper through religious exchange or visiting relatives.

Not all Koreans are happy w/ this framing. Below, the Hankyoreh newspaper warns against seeing S. Korea as "a military stronghold within a striking distance of China."

"For Brunson, such musings may read like an original 'strategic suggestion.' But for Koreans, they are a matter of life and death."
Perhaps the US views the Korean Peninsula as a military stronghold within striking distance of China. But Americans would do well to remember that the peninsula is also the cherished home of more than 50 million allied citizens.
