Breaking Down Bill
Open [this artwork] in your preferred software and investigate my choices with a colour picker.
If you investigate this piece with a colour picker in photoshop/ cop/procreate/etc, you'll find that all the purples are on the Left side of the colour box, while all the oranges and yellows are on the right. This isn't the ONLY reason the yellow pops, but it is the primary reason. The yellow gets center stage, where all other colours are muted and secondary.
I complemented the warm yellow tones with an analogous green highlight. I wanted the coat to feel stark and dazzling like sequins hit with light.
Rather than brighten the coat with increasingly lighter yellow which would decaturate it,
I used a neon green with a higher luminosity.
This allowed me to maintain a loud color scheme on the coat without desaturating any that the colours
Important to note!
Colour luminosity plays a vital role in my work, and is one of the reasons the colours in my art pop the way they do.
Rather than highlighting with saturated tones leaning towards white, I typically highlight with a colour at higher luminosity.
Luminosity describes the phenomenon where some colours are inherently brighter than others at the same level of intensity.

I use luminosity to create points of high saturation light, and then play them against low saturation areas.
Additionally I may add high saturation bounce light. This adds richness and perceived saturation to shadows of a secondary desaturated colour: shadows that need to remain muted to showcase more important focal areas.
