I lasted ten minutes. The green Fenians milling around as if they were Punch caricatures did it for me.

A superb nature book by Chloe Dalton. The writing is so simple and *restrained*, leaving space for the reader’s own feelings and imagination. You become as intimate as any human can with the curious workings of a hare’s fragile but joyous life.

How anyone can support hare-coursing beats me.
Book cover: Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton. Sunday Times bestseller. Winner Wainwright prize 2025.

Quite a gorgeous day for the autumn equinox in #Dunlaoghaire Harbour.
Beautiful day’s sea and sky. Sea is blue-green and lightly rippled, sky is clear except for a series of benign puffy clouds above the horizon. Two arms of the harbour can be seen in the distance, with lighthouses on each side.

Yes! Essential equipment now. You can’t duplicate that rice texture and flavour with simple pots and pans.

Oh, the kernels are very pretty! It’s good we had a warm summer — so the Mexican corn felt at home.

Ok! This is all good info.

We have yoghurt and berries at the ready.

Nooooo. I have nightmares about carob being used as chocolate substitute when I was living in Minnesota as a wannabe hippie teenager.

Do you know what variety the sweetcorn is? It looks delicious. There’s nothing to compare with it!

Thank you! I’ve made them already — recipe looked similar to yours, but smaller quantities in case we hate them 😆

Oh lord! Yes. That sounds familiar. Probably had them with carob milk 😕

Oh wow! That sounds amazing. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr Sock! I think of you often when we use rice cooker I got on your recommendation 😊

Actually, we fried original one recently. We changed hob from gas to induction and forgot that rice cooker was also induction. Oops. Magnets not happy. Bought a new one immediately. Expensive mistake.

Thank you! Well explained.

Overnight oats! I’m bombarded by ads for them on social media. Now I’m going to have to try them. What’s the best recipe?

Excellent skies up there today and that's only right, seeing as it is #cloudappreciationday #lookup
Rows of Victorian chimneys march underneath a busy sky with lots of different kinds of clouds.

Oh wow! I didn’t know you were working there. Are the Annesleys still there in the smaller house?

Flower crab spider (Misumena vatia) tucking into a hoverfly for dinner. Isn't she just gorgeous? 😍

Eristalis pertinax hoverfly doing her grooming routine: getting all the pollen and other garden detritus off her elegant wings and legs. Isn’t she a beauty? The looped vein in her wing denotes that she was once a rat-tailed maggot, bless her.
