I LOVE the fact that these 'hillforts' are now starting to look more like citadels, with upper 'cities' and lower 'cities'. The old polis model!

Yes - it's a crucial point. The same issues lay behind the civil war in the first century - with landed gentry either doubling down or taking a more populist approach.

That's always the most interesting discussion! I enjoyed it - obviously there's always going to be that choice in tv between a wide and nuanced discussion of factors and a more straightforward narrative, but I thought the overall approach and style was great. And my 15 year old daughter loved it!

And Domination makes for good extra reading too! I thought it a bit strange to avoid any mention of Christianity as the state religion of Rome by the end of the 4th century - and it contributed to decreasing tax revenues too as bishops & monasteries claimed exemptions! 2/2

Well, the “advice” was not to post anything “political” anywhere (I asked if Roman slavery might be considered political) and not to attend any demos/protests! The PowerPoint presentation contained a very awkward segueway between “bbc output” and “your tweets”.
