Assistant Prof @UNC Chapel Hill. Spatial Ecology, Global Change, Wildlife Conservation. I like looking for animals.
Diademed Sandpiper-plover is one of my favorites. Specialist of high elevation Andean bogs. Granted, it doesn't really migrate, which is arguably the most impressive characteristic of shorebirds.

I'm currently living in a camper with my wife and kids in NZ, and it's so refreshing to unplug from American news/politics. I'm generally not the "I'm going to leave the US if..." type of American, but I'm getting there.

I'm sitting on the Hudson in Manhattan totally stoked about these Brant. I'm so sad for the people next to me taking photos of a Canada Goose. They have no idea the shit these Brant have seen.

Love seeing others stats. Our prod has slowly decreased from around 11 kWh in 2019 to just under 9 in 2024. We've got a stand of pines in back that really limits prod. in the winter. High consumption from fam of 4 (laundry!), work from home, AC in hot summers (the big 1), and charging EV and eBike.

"Field biologists rarely have so much control. Storms wash away flags marking experiments. Trees fall on their plots. The forest and its inhabitants dispel any illusions that scientists are in charge. Humility quickly sets in." Great quote by Merlin Sheldrake

Great morning for the Durham Christmas Bird Count. Bluegray gnatcatcher and several dozen least sandpipers were both pretty good finds.

With tiny kids, it's really hard for me to make time in the early morning to get outside. We recently went camping in eastern NC and I snuck away before dawn. I was treated to this special moment with a Virginia rail.

New science! Fortunate to make small contribution to this study that adds to our understanding of the implications of climate change for phenological mismatch in birds. Expertly led by Ellen Robertson with an all-star cast of co-authors including @tinosaurs.bsky.social and others not on bluesky yet

Even though they look exactly like all the photos and videos I've seen, I was still excited to find these marine iguanas this morning in the Galapagos. With a bonus green sea 🐢
