That's fair, but then the enum definition also gives you an overview of all the possible values which can be nice. Wish Gdscript allowed you to leave out the enum name when invoking them tho

The idea behind it is definitely valid I'd probably just use an enum because it preempts spelling mistakes and issues with upper/lower case inputs. They also play nicely with switch statements and are more performant since it's just a list of integers under the hood

It's really painful to me that eldritch horror has turned into this where every story thinks a noodly sea creature is the pinnacle of horror when what you describe used to ultimately be the core of it. Not many come to mind that translate it sensibly into the visual medium
